Spencer Leader, age 70, well known in Lytham and St Annes, as 'the Poppy Man', got a big surprise at this months branch meeting, of the St Annes Royal British Legion, when he was presented with the RBL's greatest honour, a Gold Badge, along with a Certificate of appreciation for his sterling work, on behalf of the ex-service and their dependents.
Since joining the RBL at the end of his service in the Royal Army Service Cor. in 1958, Spencer has undertaken every position for the St annes Branch, including Chairman, Secretary, Welfare Worker, Poppy Organizer, Standard Bearer, and was Club Steward for many years . He is also the President of Club and Branch. But his finest achievement has been as poppy organizer over the past 32 years.
Spencer said, "when I took on the roll, in 1976 we raised a total of £400, and thanks to the help and generosity of the people of St Annes, we raised a record sum of over £20,000 in November 2007".
"I have always felt privileged to be able to help, the brave men and women who have and are still prepared to lay down their lives on behalf of us all, and to try to bring comfort to their families"
"it isn't about certificates, or Gold badges, but I feel very honoured to receive them"
Branch chairman , Albert Cooper, said, "Spencer is one of the most deserving people, to receive the Gold badge that I have come across in my 51 years involvement in the RBL, in fact the Legion found gold when he decided to join"
He went on to say," The Royal British Legion is the largest charity for the ex-service and their dependents, and despite raising ever increasing amounts each year, we are finding that due to a failure by Governments to honour its life-long duty of care to those making a unique commitment, we are being called upon to help in greater measures. It saddens me to realize how vital our roll is in the 21st century".
"We need more Spencer Leader's".
